Dragons are an intrinsic part of Greek tradition. In ancient Greek mythology, the dragon Ladon was the sleepless guardian of the golden apples in the Garden of the Hesperides who was killed by Hercules with a bow and arrow. In the Byzantine era, dragons are encountered in Acritic songs, where audacious heroes, such as Digenes Akritas, clash with them in epic battles. In Christian tradition, dragons are often depicted as symbols of evil, such as in the well-known legend of Saint George. In the lore of the Greek countryside and islands, the dragon caves of the mountains are often mentioned as dwellings of mythical creatures. Undoubtedly, dragons play a central role in Greek legends, connecting the past with the present through the ages.
